On 1st of November 1993, the Maastricht Treaty - also known as the Treaty on the European Union - entered into force.  This laid the foundation for the European Union as we know it today. From the first idea of 'a kind of United States of Europe', as Winston Churchill suggested in 1946, to the Union as we know it today, there is a lot of engagement, contracts, setbacks and breakthroughs. Above all, the willingness to give up national sovereignty in favor of a common development and the common mastering of ever new challenges.
The drawing shows the current member countries of the EU, set in a timeline of the process of European unification.
