G30S
In the
early morning hours of October 1st, 1965, the ‘September 30th Movement‘
abducted and murdered six high-ranking Indonesian generals. The group occupied the
central square in Jakarta and the radio station, from where they
announced that they had preempted a coup d‘état on President Sukarno and
were there to protect the president. The coup was defeated within a
day. As its consequence, Sukarno was disempowered and General Suharto
seized power. An unprecedented hunt for people suspected of leftist
ideas began, and it is estimated that the regime killed between 500,000
and 3 million people during the following months.
The reasons for and the masterminds of the coup still remain unclear.
The six drawings depict Indonesia‘s political situation at that time in a global context, the events of October 1st and four different theories on the background of the coup and its masterminds.
